This article is showing the opinion of a member of the public on the changing family structure. This article clearly shows the author's view on family structure today.
There are changes in the family structure which include, the reproductive function; where couples are less willing to have children and the absence of children has become the most glaring issue in western countries, the economic function; such that families are no longer considered a single economic unit, but instead its members work singly and there is barely any interaction between its members. However, there are certain areas that have remained the same such as the sexual regulation function which refers to couples having sex after marriage. Recreational function has been losing importance due to the rising of modern recreation such as casinos, movies, dance halls and night clubs. This has affected the cohesion of the family as the members rather spend time outside of the family than spend time with the family.
I would mostly agree with the views of the author as the world is constantly changing, and people nowadays have a open mindset compared to those 30 years ago. For example, i strongly agree with the point made about parental and the educational functions. "External agencies like hospitals, outpatient clinics for mothers, maternity homes, the baby clinics, nurseries and kindergartens" are widely available nowadays due to advancement in technology. For 2 working parents, the can place their children in nurseries and child-care centers while they are at work. This ensures that the child is being well taken care of while the parent is at work. Also the article states that "the modern home is not equipped to train children for their adult careers" this is because of the modernization of jobs that require a specialized agency to teach the children of the necessary things for their future career.

i also agree to most of the changes stated. One view that i disagree with would be the reproductive function of the family.
ReplyDeleteIt states, "The reproductive function of the family has suffered particularly in the western societies." However, i think this is not the case.I feel that this is due to the education level of individuals in each country and this is happening to countries with a high proportion of educated people.Examples would be the low fertility rate in Asian countries like Singapore and Japan with fertility rates of 1.23 and 1.37 respectively. They are facing this problem because educated people may prefer pursuing their dreams, degrees or jobs to having children. Also, these educated people may be aware of the high costs of raising a child ,hence, having no desire to have more children to increase their burden.
Mei Ting,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your response.
Do you mean to say that you do not agree that the reproductive function of the family has suffered only in western societies because Asian societies like Singaporean and Japanese societies also reflect that trend?
YUP!! i meant that.
ReplyDeleteTo comment on Grace's blog post, i agree with her that the world is constantly changing with a more opened mindset. However,i feel that the modernization of jobs do not require a specialized agency to teach the children of the necessary things for their future career. This is because the pros and cons of each type of education. An example would be the home schooling, in which parents teach their children instead of sending them to school. For instance, parents may focus on a specific area of education in which the child i sgood at unlike what the public education provides. This will allow the children to have a more relevant and useful skill in terms of their future career as their learning is focused. Thus not only specialised agency, but parents can also teach the children necessary things for their future career. But the problem lies down to the williness of parents.
