Chermaine/ parents:relax

The author's first main point is that young people these days are becoming smarter and even more able to make their own right decisions. They are able to think rationally and able to make decision for themselves

The second main point would be that according to statistics, teens have been having less criminal records, are less involved in illigal things. This shows that teens now abide to the law more than that of those in the previous years.

The last main point would be that whether teens will be allowed to do whatever things that adults are entitled to do. Also whether teens should be given more rights in deciding their own life. There has been an argument between two different parties about this. It is to determine whether teens are suppose to be entitled these rights and whether will they use it to their advantage or will it result in problems.

I do agree with the author that for teens to be entitled to the rights of the adults, it shall depend on the various individuals. Not everyone given the same rights and make the same and right decision. Some teens might misuse this priviledge and results in future problems. That is why i think that only teens whom are capable of making rationale decisions should be entitled this priviledge. An example would be to give the choice of a teen's education to themselves. This might result in a variation of response from different teens. From teens who realise the importance of education, who are mature enough to know that education is a very essential tool for them to succeed in life in the future will therefore choose to go to school and study hard even if given the choice to not to go to school. However on the other hand, for those teens who do not so the vitality in education and who deem education as a waste of time and being so innocent, thinking that without an education they still are able to make a mark in the society. Therefore with this thinking, they will hence choose not to attend school as they do not see any use of education. Hence, we can see that if given a choice, these teens who might be of the same age might have totally different choices and who knows when they might make the wrong choice for themselves. That is why i think that the ability to make every decisions for themselves should not be given to all teens but only those who are capable to make the rationale decisions.

Rabia/China's youth:Shaping the future.

"These 'little gods' think only of themselves."Would this apply to Singaporean youths too?

Yes.I think that this statement applies to Singaporean youths too.
After implementing the 'one-child' policy, couples in China are restricted to having only one child per couple. This was done in order to control the country's population. As couples have a single child, they tend to shower their only child with love and affection.Being the only child in the family, the child may not know how to give in,co-operate and put other's welfare at its place and think. Thus, they may only think of themselves. And since, their parents would have bought them all their needs and wants, they are considered as "little gods" as they get whatever they want.

This context applies to Singaporean youths too as parents, these days tend to have only one child due to many different reasons. These reasons may be due to the cost of living, financial cost of bringing up a child, lifestyle of parents and so on.As their parents have the financial means of buying their children all their needs and wants, kids do not realise the importance of sharing.Without realising themselves, they become stingy and tend to think of themselves only.

Jolene/The Dumbest Generation? Don't be dumb.

Q1: What does being 'dumb' mean according to this article?

According to this article, being dumb literally means that one has very little knowledge about the past. In other words, a person is dumb when he doesn't know anything much about history and is unable to answer basic history questions about his own country.

Q2: Do you agree with the article's argument? Give 3 reasons for your answer.

Yes, I do support and agree with the article's argument about Generation Y being the dumbest of all other generations.

To start off, I believe that our generation's ignorance to facts of the past does not necessary categorize us as being dull-witted in this context. Though it may be true that generation Y do lack history knowledge, as compared to other generations, generation Y are, I would say, better specialized in other areas. For example, as generation Y, widely known as the "digital generation", have such brilliant advancements around them, answers to history questions are easily available. Though they do not know much information, they do care and know where to find such informations online. Hence, I feel that people who do not know where to find information are more dumb than people who do not know information.

On top of that, generation Y is smart, indefinitely. People in this generation are very independent and they surpasses people in other generations in this area. Intelligence is not all about knowing history, it's not all about knowing who Chaucer from Chopin is or who William Rehnquist is. Intelligence is about independent and active learning and about knowing how to apply knowledge on daily activities. This, are the traits of generation Y. As such, videogames can also help gen Y to apply what they learn from the games into their lives and being able to apply what they have learnt, is intelligence. Thus, it is injustice to claim that gen Y are the dumbest generation.

Lastly, history, such as The World War I & II and The Japanese Occupation, are important because they reflect the thoughts and actions of the past leaders and it teaches us to not make the same mistakes that they have once made in the past. However, it is gen Yers' choice of whether they want to learn about other history events or figures like Dick Cheney. Not knowing who those people are or what those events have led to does not mean that gen Yers' are dumb, because they have the right to choose what and who they want to learn from and relate to. In other words, not everyone is able to learn something valuable and apply it to their lives from all history contexts. Therefore, not knowing certain history issues is not equivilent to being dumb.

Sella/They're capitalist-minded-and they're changing the nation forever

How are India's youths similar to/different from Singaporean youths.

Firstly most youths in India are getting married based on true love instead of arranged marriages. They also want the marriage to be approved by their parents. This rising trend is similar to majority of the youths in Singapore today. In Singapore, youths are allowed to date or get married to anyone they want, without letting their parents choose who they decide to marry.

Secondly, their is a great increase in the number of students taking computer lessons and literacy. Just like youths in Singapore, more of them are exposed to new things on the Internet and magazines or newspapers. In additional to that, computer lessons in India can actually improve the economy, by increasing the capita income from $450 to $650. therefore, youths in Singapore and and India are getting more exposed to different new things everyday via mass media technology.

However, some 47% of Indian's population is under the age of 20. Already they wield $2.8 billion worth of discretionary income, and their families spend an $3.7 billion on them every year. in 2015, 55% of Indian's population will be under the age of 20. This shows that ,unlike Singapore, youths in India has a greater spending power. Youths in India start their own business without much background knowledge and are willing to take the risk. They also demand for more accountability from their politicians. They have the guts to demand and protest and speak their minds out without having to be scared of anything. Therefore, youths in India are different from youths in Singapore in the sense that they are not afraid of voicing out their opinion when it comes to politics and spending power.

Pamela/They're capitalist-minded-and they're changing the nation forever

Despite coming from different cultural backgrounds, India's youths and Singapore's youth do share some similarities.

Firstly, both youths from Singapore and India marry people who they actually desire too. This is largely due to modern day western influences as compared to the traditional arrange method. Since youths that come from a country's with a rich culture are just as easily influenced to one without, it sometimes makes me wonder if a country's culture plays a vital role in our youths lives.

Secondly the Indian youths and the Singaporean youths both show great interest in technology. The majority of households have at least a set of television and computer in their houses. Apart from that, there are also rising sales of music players and game controllers in singapore. In India there is huge competition to enter the techonological schools. " Along with half his graduating class, he intends to take the tough exam for the Indian Institute of Technology, a system of prestigious, high-tech universities.

Contrariwise, Singapore youths live quite different lifestyles from Indian youths. Indians youths seems to have a greater desire to improve one's social status. Singapore youths on the other hand are more complacent and lack the will to upgrade themselves.

Mei Ting/ Generation OMG

1) How has or will the experience of living through an economic crisis shape each of the generations mentioned in the article?

In the 1930s, it has shaped its generation of artists to be lass constrained as there was no art market to speak of. Thinkers who would go on to be the public intellectuals of their day are shaped to seek a traditional path as they knew there were no academic jobs. Mr Howe said that the ‘30s were raised in a cocoon, to trust the system, keep their nose clean, study hard and be a technocrat.

The youth generation born into the great depression was doomed as the silent generation of being cautious and resigned, uninterested in striking out in new directions or shaping the great issues of the day. In addition, the variations of youth’s ambition have shrunk with a majority wanting a good job in a big firm. This has developed a certain sense of maturity in the oldest young generation in the world. Moreover, the worst disruption of depression coincided with the critical years of development resulted in the lack of direction or the sense of confidence. These depression babies have developed a generation of being a conformist, risk-adverse generation which time described, thus asking their potential employers about their pension plans.

However in today’s recession, youths are being affected by many factors such as the context, mood of the time and how children understand the spirit of the times. Youths in the last four years have shown young people being more civil-minded. Also, the older generation among the recession youth might feel bolder striking out in more creative directions, in which have cause people to give more room for creativity. As these youths are born and grown in the too-much–information age of Judy Blume, they were being shaped as “the Homelanders” as in security, in the system they trust and take for granted.

2) It was said that “There is no simple cause-and-effect relationship in how economic adversity pushed a generation into any one kind of behaviour...The impact depends on the context and the mood of the time and how children understand the spirit of the times.”

In your opinion, how would young Singaporeans be shaped by the current recession? How would you be shaped by it? Justify your answer.

Young Singaporeans are shaped through the responsibilities they have to take on during the current recession. For instance, through the current recession, young Singaporeans will be more familiar with the concept of saving money. By doing so, they may learn to spend lesser so as to ensure their families have enough to last them throughout the month as inflation have increased the cost of living. This would allow young Singaporeans to better handle money matters. Furthermore, the young Singaporeans have witness the consequences of bad management and bad investment. Through these, it tells young Singaporeans to be more careful in whatever they invest in.

The current recession have allowed me to have a better understanding on how the economy works. For example, I learned how the Lehman Brother’s company affected worldwide and how spending money in the current economy would improve Singapore’s economy. However, this has to be done moderately.

Azizah Re: Involvement of youth in local politics

To what extent are youths in your society not interested in politics?

Politics, in my opinion, happens everywhere. It is not just about parliamentary politics. We can even observe politics in the corporate, academic and religious institutions. From my point of view, politics may refer to social relations that involves authority. Hence, it may also be possible that youths are indeed involve in politics in one way or another, with or without them realizing it.

I believe that youths are interested in politics, just not so much on parliamentary politics. They may be very much involved in other aspects such as racial, academic and gender politics. For example, youths are concerned about racial politics and we can observe this by looking at how the netizens respond to racially-insensitive blogs or videos posted on the net. Netizens are generally made up of youths and to see such offensive materials being commented on, there is some evidence that youths are indeed not totally ignorant of political issues. Other examples include online forums and facebook.

However, people may have the misconception that youths are not interested in politics. This may be because youths nowadays seem to be focusing more on academics and social life than to spend the time to find out what is going on in the parliament. They may find the poltical scene too irrelevant and "their dry content" repelling them from wanting to understand more about it. Yes, the schools may try to instill interest in politics among the students by enforcing national education, but beyond the classrooms, youths make little effort or initiative in digging for more information. Hence, it may be because of this that the general public sees them as politically ignorant.

Ong Bao Lin / Re: Involvement of Youths in Local Politics

Are Youths really not interested in Politics?

To me, Politics mean things and affairs that only involve around the government and the policies made. However, now I kind of knew that they are different types of Politics in the world. Not only those kinds of Politics which young children would not be able to understand or be interested in, there are also Politics that are around us in our daily lives that we would encounter. Politics are anything when there are two sides of arguments on an issue.

Youths are interested in Politics because they are also engaged in Politics in their daily life and they are actively involved in Politics in their own ways. For example, Youths are involved with different Politics like equality, selection of their own student councilors and even arguing with their friends because they have different stands on an issue. Youths are also actively giving their opinions, complains and suggestions on Facebook and Twitters. Therefore, Youths are interested and involved in Politics in their own ways. Youths could also be stating out their views and doing more research on some Politics when they are debating on one side of an issue or a view. Therefore, Youths are interested in Politics.

Youths are also not interested in Politics in some ways. Youths are not interested in globally issues because they are not infected by those changes directly. So they are not interested in what is happening in the world or their country’s policies. Therefore, we normally do not see all Youths reading many newspapers and interested in the government’s talks. Youths also feel that studies are the most important things to them now and they could just catch up on the Politics later on. However, when they have finished their studies, they are not Youths anymore and they most likely have some difficulty in some subjects or situations because they do not know their country well. However, not all Youths are like this as most Youths already know the importance of knowing their surroundings well. So Youths are generally getting interested in Politics. Hence, Youths are still interested in Politics.

Ng Zeng Woon/ The Dumbest Generation? Don't be Dumb

In my opinion, the term "dumb", in context with the article, is used to highlight the plain ignorance of Generation Y towards information worth learning about from the past besides the conventional meaning of the term  "dumb".

I am opposing the argument that Generation Y is the dumbest of all generations. Here are my reasons:
1) First of all I would like to question Emory University Professor for English Mark Bauerlein's argument that Generation Y's intellectual shortcomings is due to advancements in technology. Yes indeed technology has made our lives all the more better than previous generations, and every improvement in technology is significant in each generation experiencing such advancements in technology. However can we blame the intellectual shortcomings of Generation Y just because their lives has been improved significantly? On the contrary I believe that these advancements in technology are actually key to taking intelligence of Generation Y to a higher level. It is hard to deny that it has made them lazier as now information, unlike the past, is now available at a click of a computer mouse. However it is not about how easy they are able to collect the information but rather HOW they make use of the information they can easily get for their own benefit. Like cognitive scientist Marcel Just of Carnegie Mellon University said "Insofar as new information technology exercises our minds and provides more information, it has to be improving thinking ability." His words alone proves a point; with technology, we actually improve and adapt our thinking abilities to meet the demands of an ever-changing society, making Generation Y more capable to handle anything that comes their way.

2) IQ scores are going up across the globe. IQ tests are meant to measure thinking capacity of humans and NOT their knowledge of the world. That comes under another test called "Current Affairs Quiz.'' Even if people belonging to Generation Y's level of knowledge of events and history around the world is sorely lacking, its definitely not equals to saying that Generation Y is dumb or even the dumbest of all generations. In the first place, would knowledge of war history help you to pass a Chemistry test? Absolutely not! It's more about the thinking capability that is emphasised today rather than the knowledge possessed, although yes indeed having more knowledge would enhance Generation Y's education greatly. And given that the thinking capabilities are more advanced than that of previous generations it does bode well for Generation Y to make an impact in society with their thinking skills.

3) Generation Y is indeed blessed to have better technology and much improved lives today, but it is being criticised for being dumb due to its ignorance towards solid history and knowledge. To be honest, it's all about choice. They have a choice to absorb the knowledge and use it to their benefits. Ignorance does not equate to being dumb; it is an unfair equation. Reason so is that their ignorance to certain stuff might be of information that is totally not of any use to them at all. Perhaps they might be more interested in info in which they can utilise for making society a much better place. This does not prove any slight presence of "dumbness" in Generation Y at all.

HuiJun(:/ Climate Change, One Light Bulb at a Time

What issues do you think Singaporean youths would really speak out for?
how about you?

Have you ever wondered what you would speak up for? As the youth of Singapore, what do you expect from the society or government? Will you raise the issues you have in your mind? Well, if you do, do not hide it but instead, voice it out loud- blog about it, post a note on the MOE board, rant about it on youth forums etc. Just to name a few, several issues raised by other youths in Singapore include the places of interest for youngsters or youths to hang out, environmental issue like global warming and health problems due to the haze recently.

In the past, Youths generally hang out in areas like Heeren, Scape Youth Park and Cathay Cineleisure. However, these places have indeed lost its appeal amongst the youths, especially when the Orchard belt has sprang up new players like Ion and Orchard Central. Nevertheless, Youths are still not satisfied with the facilities and shopping malls around. Youths like adventures and excitement, thus they tend to expect more. Some suggest that the government should inject more vitality and vibrantness when designing the Youth Triangle- Heeren, Scape Youth park- and cathay cineleisure, promote activities specifically targeted at youths, organise flea markets, funfair etc.

Next, the weather condition in Singapore is getting from bad to worse. The naturally humid and blistering hot country is currently experiencing a bigger problem, which is haze. As Youth Oylmpic Games is around the corner, many youths have already started training and making preparations. Youths are concern about their health and some even cut short their outdoor practices just to avoid breathing in too much polluted air. This is no doubt a concern for many.

Lastly, regarding global warming, Youths are worried as they know that they'll be left to cope with a warmer world tomorrow if nothing is done to slow carbon emissions today. Just last year, 2009, Singapore has been called the Year of Climate Change by the United Nations. And in Singapore, major initiatives were introduced to tackle global warming. If global warming measures are not taken seriously, many youths will suffer in the years to come. Hence, many are concern about this issue.

We, Youths, are not a bunch of ignorant people. We will stand together as one and voice out our thoughts and opinion. We know what is happening around us and we do care.

benjamin/yong people's protests are easy to mock-but ignore them at your peril.

1. I agree to some extent. Hardships allow youths to mature to some extent due to the following.

Firstly, when the youths face hardship like in a time of food scarcity will they learn not to waste food. They are able to be compassionate to people by sharing food to those who do not have food at all. This are the many ways in which food scarcity are able to train a person to be more mature.

Another, like going through the army, for the guys especially, it trains the guys to be mature. It helps them to learn how to be independent and also to be able to think maturely.

2. Singapore youths are not at all mature to my opinion.

Youths are the group people who will just mix around a group of people who may possess bad influence like smoking and drugging. They do that in such a way to get them the love they need and they do things that these groups do to be accepted into the group. They do not think of the consequences and the feeling of their parents when they do this kind of things.

Youths also are immature cause they are those group of people who are not independent in some ways and still require their parents to finance them in some ways or another like maybe paying their handphone bill and their shopping needs.

Chermaine/ their lives are a open (face)book

I think that online social networking is harmful to people my age. Firstly, many teenagers are unaware of the dangers lurking behind those social networks. Many include their personal information in such networks and might lead to unwanted attention. These networks are able to be accessed to every single person world wide and who knows where your information might end up at. Hence, it is certainly unsafe to publish every single personal information of yours such as address as well as telephone number on social networks. Therefore, with the lack of knowledge and experience on how to use such networks safely, i think that such online social networks are harmful to people my age.

Secondly, using of such networks might also become an addiction. In countries like China, most of the youths spend their time in cyber cafe surfing such social networks. The continual visiting of such cafes and spending most of their day there might lead to addiction. In this 21st century, almost every household has access to the internet and most youths spend alot of their time online visiting such social networks. It is said tha tyouths "checked their profiles more than 10 times a day." This constant habit of going online might cause one to be addicted to the usage of the social networks unknowingly. This might lead to them being affected in their studies because they spend most of their time online and therefore negleting their studies. Therefore, it is certainly harmful to them, if they do not control their time used online and it becomes an addiction.

Lastly, the social network might result in them meeting bad influence. Such online websites are accessible to everyone world wide and one may never know when they will be so unlucky to meet someone who is of a bad influence. Many of illegal drug and cigarettes trafficking are happening online nowadays. Therefore, how can teenagers be sure that they will not be influenced to be involved in such illegal activities? That is why, it is unsafe for teenagers to go online and befriend anyone whom they do not know at all. They might be easily influenced as most teenagers are still rather vulnerable. Therefore i reinforce my point that online social network is harmful to people my age.

However, perhaps it might be healthy to a certain extent. Parents these days have less time to spend with their children due to their hectic working schedule. Therefore, it would be good when teenagers voice out their concerns and pour out their sorrows online instead of keeping it all to themselves. Most suicide cases happens because the teenagers can no longer contain their grief. Hence, if they were able to 'relieve' themselves by not keeping everything to themselves, this might reduce the cases of suicide. Therefore, online social network might be healthy to people my age to a certain extent.

Gladys/ Dare violate a copyright in Hong Kong?

Can peer pressure really help fight crime? Give at least 3 reasons why you think so

Yes, I think that peer pressure can help fight crime.

Friends, I believe, are a very powerful source of influence to the people around them. This may be due to the increase in time spent with them, hence having shared interests and beliefs. Friends are able to convince others into as well as out of doing certain things, in this case, crime. Since peer pressure is able to cause crimes to occur, I believe that it can also help to fight crime. However, this depends on the type of friends that one has, which results in the inevitable influence friends has over a person. In this case of Hong Kong, teenagers are roped in to reduce piracy online simply by reporting the links to the relevant authorities. This simple action may help reduce piracy on the internet as the teenagers' friends may be afraid of being reported, hence reduce piracy activity or stopping it completely. Hence, peer pressure is able to help fight crime.

Secondly, as teenagers go through the periods of emotional changes, they may feel that their friends are of better advice compared to their parents. This may be due to their belief that their friends understand them more than their parents. Teenagers may feel that the generation gap between them and their parents is a barrier between them, hence the reduction or worse, breakdown in communication. However, in friends, they feel and trust that friends will always lend a listening ear and give sound advice which they will listen to. Hence, peer pressure is a more effective way of fighting crime than parents.

All in all, I feel that peer pressure, if used correctly, will be able to help fight crime. As friends are a great source of influence to others, if peer pressure used correctly, can help lead a teenager away from the life of crime, hence fighting crime.

GRACE/MYSPACE MEDICAL

Question
Do you think a similar message on awareness of public health can be sent to Singaporean youths through online social-networking sites?

Yes, i do think that messages on awareness of public health can be sent to Singaporean youths through online social-networking sites. But in the case of Singapore, i would think that facebook would be a better channel for these messages to be sent instead of Myspace as more Singapore youths use facebook instead of Myspace.

Firstly, I think that it is important for youths to know the knowledge of public health like the effects of drug and alcohol abuse. Once they know the harmful effects, many will think twice before consumption of any drugs or alcohol
. With youths being able to think rationally in that manner, then the goal of reaching youths through social-networking sites would have been accomplished.

However, the reaction from the Singaporean youths might be the same as the American youths. A handful of Singaporean youths might actually read the content of the message and spread the word around. However, there might be another handful of youths that might feel disturbed by the content of the message as the youths might think that the content doesn't apply to them at the moment. There might be another group of youths that might think that it's a waste of reading the message as they presume to have know what the content is.

All in all, I think that it is possible for messages of that sort to be sent out to Singaporean youths, but whether they read it or not, no one can stop them. Personally, if I received a message of that sort on facebook, I will look through the content first, before actually deleting it, because it will never hurt to learn new things.
