1. I agree to some extent. Hardships allow youths to mature to some extent due to the following.
Firstly, when the youths face hardship like in a time of food scarcity will they learn not to waste food. They are able to be compassionate to people by sharing food to those who do not have food at all. This are the many ways in which food scarcity are able to train a person to be more mature.
Another, like going through the army, for the guys especially, it trains the guys to be mature. It helps them to learn how to be independent and also to be able to think maturely.
2. Singapore youths are not at all mature to my opinion.
Youths are the group people who will just mix around a group of people who may possess bad influence like smoking and drugging. They do that in such a way to get them the love they need and they do things that these groups do to be accepted into the group. They do not think of the consequences and the feeling of their parents when they do this kind of things.
Youths also are immature cause they are those group of people who are not independent in some ways and still require their parents to finance them in some ways or another like maybe paying their handphone bill and their shopping needs.

Can you elaborate on how training in NS makes our SG men more mature? What makes them grow mentally? Why are they able to "think maturely"?
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think in your example of facing food scarcity, will youths really be willing to share? Are we not all selfish people, who considers I, Me and Myself as top priority? I think it's really an assumption on your part to state that we will really share our food. I'm not saying that everyone is selfish but let's put ourselves into their shoes- in times of crisis, we are struggling to survive.
When you yourself have difficulty trying to stay alive (in this case, to not die of starvation), will you give up your food to let others stay alive while you tolerate hunger? I highly doubt so.
Of course there are exceptions, like saints who sacrifice themselves... ... but generally, most people won't!
Your second point that youths are immature:
I think your point about youths being susceptible to bad influence should be further explained. How does this mean they are immature? Are you referring to them as immature because they cannot resist peer pressure? They are unable to think for themselves?
However I strongly disagree with your point when you said that youths are immature because they are dependent on their parents.
Youths are people aged 15-24. In Singapore at this age, youths are studying and we all know how tough it is.
Being financially unsound does not equate to being immature. If you say so, what about adults in their mid-30s who don't have a job? They are also financially unstable. Can you then say they are immature?
Also, I think being able to pay for your own handphone bills and shopping only means that youths are able to save and spend their own money, i.e. able to control their finances. But it cannot be said that having this ability means they are mature.
I also like to add that you should define "mature" - people have different definitions! Is it the ability to discern right and wrong? Or is it the ability to think one step ahead of others?
After you've defined "mature", I think you'll be able to make your argument stronger and more substantial, and people won't be able to rebut you so easily. :)
I don't think you should claim that Singapore youths are not at all mature because there are many youths who ARE mature in a sense where they know how to choose from right and wrong.
ReplyDeleteIt's true that some youths get influenced by their friends to smoke and take drugs, but that's just the minority because you have to consider those that know how to think and know that every decision they make might have consquences.
So i think that only SOME youths are immature as there are many others who already have mature thoughts.
In my utmost but humble opinion,I disagree with your perception. You say that when youths face hardships like food scarcity, they will instantly transform into saints of the Earth by being passionate and share their food with other people. But have you ever thought that food scarcity has never happened before? Yes our country may have faced food scarcity, but have you thought of what kind of food? Food scarcity meaning the banned of rabbit sweets from the tainted melamine? Think about it. Singapore is wealthy and before we even become compassionate in sharing food, we don't even have the chance of getting starved. I get what you mean.
ReplyDeleteYou are trying to say that when teenagers face hardships, they are able to put themselves into the shoes of their counterparts. I disagree to your stand because it is an absolute statement, since you used to word will. You mean that when teenagers are starving, they will actually be so kind hearted to give up their food for others at the expense of getting gastric pains?
Then again, you say " Youths are the group people who will just mix around a group of people who may possess bad influence like smoking and drugging. " Are you referring to yourself being a susceptible victim to getting influenced by delinquents? Are you referring to the youths of meridian junior college of being naive and immature to even get hooked with such stuffs like drugs and smoking?
So it goes on.
What is your definition of being mature? I'll take it that being mature is having the ability to think for oneself and being developed mentally. Therefore, i disagree with your point that singaporeans youths are not mature. Many youths these days do have the ability to think for themselves and decide the way they live. Youths are people from the age of 15-24. Many yoths already have their lives planned out. Lets say, many youths these days are already working. When they go to work, they have to face all the difficulties in work by themselves. Therefore, it show of their capability to think for themselves, and decide on what to do without any guidance. Hence, i think that most youts are indeed mature.
ReplyDeleteTo kaka :D. I am not saying that now there will be a food scarcity, I am not saying in Singapore too. You are just putting words into my mouth :D. :D You tell me food scarcity has never occurred before. :D. Then think again. :D Food Scarcity is happening in Africa now, many of which is not reported and not known unless we go in and see it for ourselves. :D…… Then u tells me food scarcity never happen in Singapore. It happens but, maybe it is not that obvious. When the chicken flu hit Singapore, Singapore had to move away from fresh chicken to frozen chicken and no longer is there fresh egg available in large amount. You tell me that is not food scarcity. Youths do not need to purposely give up food to ensure that there is food for the people. They can try to ensure that they eat what they bought and not throw away. They can support activity by WFO like donation of money to the people :D.
ReplyDeleteto me, i think your second point is basically a sweeping generalization of youths.
ReplyDeleteIt would be appreciated if you readdress this issue.
after all, the youths you are referring to cannot fully represent the whole singapore youth population.
my second point the one talking about smoking is more to show that youth tend to do things which make hurt those around them.....
ReplyDelete2. Singapore youths are not at all mature to my opinion.
ReplyDeleteYouths are the group people who will just mix around a group of people who may possess bad influence like smoking and drugging. They do that in such a way to get them the love they need and they do things that these groups do to be accepted into the group. OK this is like a hot topic.
Immaturity is the opposite of maturity. So if maturity is to gain wisdom or experience with age, then immaturity implies that is lacks the wisdom or experience that age has yet to bring.
Uninformed decisions like taking up smoking and getting hooked on drugs are signs of immaturity and bad judgement (and are also bad examples because they have become so stereotypical).
Perhaps, Benjamin, you could expand your argument by providing more evidence of immaturity? Like posting racially-insensitive remarks online? Like having an affair with a famous film director and then making a big kebab out of it because you couldn't handle it? Like filming one's boyfriend and oneself engaging in sexual intercourse and then crying about the video making a debut online?
Also, don't forget your OV. You should also highlight that yes, some youths demonstrate a level of maturity. Eg. National competitors who take a win or loss graciously or youths who actively volunteer because they want to contribute to the community etc.
No right and wrong but you must have your evidence and elaboration. This goes for everyone as well.
