To what extent are youths in your society not interested in politics?
Politics, in my opinion, happens everywhere. It is not just about parliamentary politics. We can even observe politics in the corporate, academic and religious institutions. From my point of view, politics may refer to social relations that involves authority. Hence, it may also be possible that youths are indeed involve in politics in one way or another, with or without them realizing it.
I believe that youths are interested in politics, just not so much on parliamentary politics. They may be very much involved in other aspects such as racial, academic and gender politics. For example, youths are concerned about racial politics and we can observe this by looking at how the netizens respond to racially-insensitive blogs or videos posted on the net. Netizens are generally made up of youths and to see such offensive materials being commented on, there is some evidence that youths are indeed not totally ignorant of political issues. Other examples include online forums and facebook.
However, people may have the misconception that youths are not interested in politics. This may be because youths nowadays seem to be focusing more on academics and social life than to spend the time to find out what is going on in the parliament. They may find the poltical scene too irrelevant and "their dry content" repelling them from wanting to understand more about it. Yes, the schools may try to instill interest in politics among the students by enforcing national education, but beyond the classrooms, youths make little effort or initiative in digging for more information. Hence, it may be because of this that the general public sees them as politically ignorant.

an example of how the school instill interest in politics is through moot parliment which is conducted in all post-sec school.
ReplyDeleteI think the most apparent form of politics would be social ones, like "hey I dislike so and so" or even simply outcasting someone can be deemed as having politics.
ReplyDeleteAnd since youths (like us) enjoy gossiping, it shows that we are still interested because we always want to find out who's being left out, or who's the odd one out.
In fact, we might even be the ones who started this whole political issue ourselves by spreading rumours!
i think that youths may develop a greater interest in political issues if they are made simpler to them.
ReplyDeletevery often, youths find politics complicated and thus find it very dry..
so maybe if these political issues are made simpler and discussed in class, youths may develop an interst in it!
i feel that youths are embarrassed totalk about politics publicly and so they choose to talk and discuss about it through the web where their profile is kept secret
ReplyDeleteAgreed!
ReplyDeleteAs politics are be defined under different catagories, such as racial or government.
Politics are going on in our everyday life, without even realising it at times.
However, we, as youths should be more involved in government politics, as it would concern our future.
I believe if political issues are portrayed in a more interesting way, youths will be more willing to discuss about it. For me, I too find politics nowadays, quite irrelevant to me.
