I think that online social networking is harmful to people my age. Firstly, many teenagers are unaware of the dangers lurking behind those social networks. Many include their personal information in such networks and might lead to unwanted attention. These networks are able to be accessed to every single person world wide and who knows where your information might end up at. Hence, it is certainly unsafe to publish every single personal information of yours such as address as well as telephone number on social networks. Therefore, with the lack of knowledge and experience on how to use such networks safely, i think that such online social networks are harmful to people my age.
Secondly, using of such networks might also become an addiction. In countries like China, most of the youths spend their time in cyber cafe surfing such social networks. The continual visiting of such cafes and spending most of their day there might lead to addiction. In this 21st century, almost every household has access to the internet and most youths spend alot of their time online visiting such social networks. It is said tha tyouths "checked their profiles more than 10 times a day." This constant habit of going online might cause one to be addicted to the usage of the social networks unknowingly. This might lead to them being affected in their studies because they spend most of their time online and therefore negleting their studies. Therefore, it is certainly harmful to them, if they do not control their time used online and it becomes an addiction.
Lastly, the social network might result in them meeting bad influence. Such online websites are accessible to everyone world wide and one may never know when they will be so unlucky to meet someone who is of a bad influence. Many of illegal drug and cigarettes trafficking are happening online nowadays. Therefore, how can teenagers be sure that they will not be influenced to be involved in such illegal activities? That is why, it is unsafe for teenagers to go online and befriend anyone whom they do not know at all. They might be easily influenced as most teenagers are still rather vulnerable. Therefore i reinforce my point that online social network is harmful to people my age.
However, perhaps it might be healthy to a certain extent. Parents these days have less time to spend with their children due to their hectic working schedule. Therefore, it would be good when teenagers voice out their concerns and pour out their sorrows online instead of keeping it all to themselves. Most suicide cases happens because the teenagers can no longer contain their grief. Hence, if they were able to 'relieve' themselves by not keeping everything to themselves, this might reduce the cases of suicide. Therefore, online social network might be healthy to people my age to a certain extent.

I feel that it is so not possible for this to happen. :D having people. "These networks are able to be accessed to every single person world wide and who knows where your information might end up at." these is due to the fact that now all social network allow youths to determine how much they want stranger to know how much they want to reveal their private information be it.
ReplyDeleteBut i also disagree to the face that social network can be used to do illegal stuff as who is not so intellegent to post something illegal online and let the police can the person :D. ya........
I agree with benjamin's point of view about how youths are responsible in determining how much information they want to post on the net. Youths are mature enough to know what kinds of dangers they may face by posting their personal details on the net. They may be warned or reminded on the dangers of internet in one way or another. An example of such is CRuSH, which is a workshop that targets young people and spread awareness on the harmful consequence of misusing the internet.
ReplyDeleteI feel that youths have to take responsibility for their actions and they are mature enough to think for themselves. Yes, I agree with Azizah. Youths nowadays are equipped with the knowledge of lurking dangers on the web, as such they can make sound decisions so as to protect their personal details.
ReplyDeleteOnline social networking can be good or bad, depending how the invidual uses it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Azizah's point of view about youths being mature and not leaking out personal details on net. Youths should know the dangers and be responsible for not leaking out important details about themselves to others.
Regarding addiction, I guess this depends on the user, how he controls himself. No one can stop him unless he limits himself.
True enough that youths can control the amount of information they want to post on the net. However i said that "Therefore, with the lack of knowledge and experience on how to use such networks safely, i think that such online social networks are harmful to people my age." It lies in the fact, that youths are inexperienced and unaware about the dangers of such networks. Yes, they may be able to determine how much they want to reveal private information. However, without experience, how will they know exactly how much of information they are to reveal? Also, how will they know if a information they give is dangerous. They might unconciously post the information up without knowing its consequences. Therefore, it sitll lies in the fact that its because youths are inexperienced and ignorant. Therefore, social networking may be harmful to them.
ReplyDeleteI feel that youths nowadays are given much more freedom than youths in the past. With the advancements of technology, youths are able to access these social network easily. Thus it is quite impossible to protect them from the dangers from the social networks. However, I feel that it's also youths responsibility to ensure that they are safe from the dangers from the net.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Azizah's point on how youths are responsible in determining how much information they want to post on the net. The internet is accessible to anyone in the world now. Professors from universities actually check up applicants' myspace/facebook profiles to decide whether to give the scholarship or not.
