Q1: What does being 'dumb' mean according to this article?
According to this article, being dumb literally means that one has very little knowledge about the past. In other words, a person is dumb when he doesn't know anything much about history and is unable to answer basic history questions about his own country.
Q2: Do you agree with the article's argument? Give 3 reasons for your answer.
Yes, I do support and agree with the article's argument about Generation Y being the dumbest of all other generations.
To start off, I believe that our generation's ignorance to facts of the past does not necessary categorize us as being dull-witted in this context. Though it may be true that generation Y do lack history knowledge, as compared to other generations, generation Y are, I would say, better specialized in other areas. For example, as generation Y, widely known as the "digital generation", have such brilliant advancements around them, answers to history questions are easily available. Though they do not know much information, they do care and know where to find such informations online. Hence, I feel that people who do not know where to find information are more dumb than people who do not know information.
On top of that, generation Y is smart, indefinitely. People in this generation are very independent and they surpasses people in other generations in this area. Intelligence is not all about knowing history, it's not all about knowing who Chaucer from Chopin is or who William Rehnquist is. Intelligence is about independent and active learning and about knowing how to apply knowledge on daily activities. This, are the traits of generation Y. As such, videogames can also help gen Y to apply what they learn from the games into their lives and being able to apply what they have learnt, is intelligence. Thus, it is injustice to claim that gen Y are the dumbest generation.
Lastly, history, such as The World War I & II and The Japanese Occupation, are important because they reflect the thoughts and actions of the past leaders and it teaches us to not make the same mistakes that they have once made in the past. However, it is gen Yers' choice of whether they want to learn about other history events or figures like Dick Cheney. Not knowing who those people are or what those events have led to does not mean that gen Yers' are dumb, because they have the right to choose what and who they want to learn from and relate to. In other words, not everyone is able to learn something valuable and apply it to their lives from all history contexts. Therefore, not knowing certain history issues is not equivilent to being dumb.

your intro to your queston part b is differ from the content :D.
ReplyDeleteAgree to some of the things that is brought out.
Agree about the facet that we got things to learn from the past. :D. But I disagree that not knowing certain history issue is not equivalent to dumb. They are Just so dumb!!!!... cause this history is just so essential. These can be like how singapore is found, how singapore is rule by raffles in the 80s. How our father came to singapore. You tell me this are not important. Youths just need to know this and those who dont know are dumb cause it is a history unique to singapore and no where else. Nobody have a right to decide what is valuable from the past as all is important. Like in 1930s, the way of Hitler led the country is valuable for us now, cause his leadership is one which we want to avoid. :D
not father but forefather
ReplyDeleteI agree that generation Y is not dumb as they are able to find informations using much more resources such as the internet. :)
ReplyDeleteI do not agree with your stand that generation Y is the dumbest generation. According to your definition of dumb, it is said that'dumb literally means that one has very little knowledge about the past.' However, generation Y do have a relatively great amount of knowledge about the past. Education these days includes the need to learn about the past. This is seen through the need to take up subjects like social studies and history in school. These topics educate youths on the past, through this, youths might even learn more about the past than any other person of the past generations. Therefore, i do not support with the article's stand that generation Y is the dumbest generation
ReplyDeleteI do not agree that generation Y is the dumbest generation because they are able to find informations by themselves and in turn will learn from it. They will then have historical information or other types of information. Therefore, generation Y is not the dumbest generation.
ReplyDeleteOh um, the article's stand was that youths in Gen Y are not dumb, so I agree with it. And then it'll make my content relevant.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree with Chermaine that Gen Y has a great knowledge of Sinagpore's history and that the examples brought up by her proves that we do have substantial facts about Sinagpore's history, at least. (:
