Esmond Lam : To what extent is Singapore a family-friendly society?

In Singapore, the government encourages family bonding. They encourage families in Singapore to get together more often in the hope of fostering stronger ties in the families. The society should be family-friendly as this will provide room for family members to know each other better, and prevent generation gaps from forming. For example, there is an event known as the National Family Celebrations held annually in Singapore that aims to get families together. It encourages Singaporeans to take time off their busy schedules to enjoy a day out with their families at their own time, and own target. However, not all families in Singapore will go for such events as some may not be interested, whereas some may just think that such events are meaningless. This is because there may be already generation gaps in these families. Hence, if the response to these events is limited, they should not be held too often to prevent the wastage of resources. Hence, though family bonding events do indeed help foster stronger ties in families, there are still limitations that reduces the effectiveness of such events.
